San Sebastian snapped its four-game skid and finished its first-round campaign on a bright note after a 78-61 drubbing of Emilio Aguinaldo College in the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament Friday, Oct. 14, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

The Stags fended off the Generals’ first-half rally behind the efforts of Rhinwil Yambing, Alex Desoyo, and Liam Concha before stepping on the pedal and catching fire in the next 20 minutes.

San Sebastian, which improved to a 3-6 record, waxed hot in the payoff period and came in with all guns blazing to completely silence EAC, gaining momentum from a strong 22-12 earlier in the third quarter.

A commanding 11-2 run down the stretch, highlighted by a couple of threes from Itchie Altamirano, Jessie Sumoda, and James Una enabled the Stags to easily turn back the Generals en route to a 20-point lead, 78-58, with a minute left.

It was Alex Desoyo who sparked that spurt with a one-hander shot and not even a late three-pointer from Adam Doria could save EAC as it sustained its ninth straight defeat.

Desoyo also led the Stags’ balanced attack with 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists while Sumoda and Yambing scored 10 points apiece and combined for 10 rebounds.

San Sebastian also clamped down on its defense from the get-go, limiting the Generals’ go-to guy Allen Liwag to two points only on a 0-of-7 shooting clip.

JP Maguliano paced the Generals with 19 points and nine rebounds while Doria chipped in 12 points and three rebounds.
