Tokyo Olympian Cris Nievarez and partner Christian Joseph Del Rosario Jasmin topped the preliminaries of the men’s lightweight double sculls on Monday, May 9, highlighting an eventful first day for PH rowers at the Thuy Nguyen Boat Racing Center in the 31st Southeast Asian Games.
Nievarez and Jasmin clocked 6:22:18 to top three other countries, with Vietnam finishing second with a 6:28:01 time followed by Indonesia (6:33:96) and Thailand (6:36:75).
In men’s lightweight coxless four preliminaries, the quartet of Edgar Recana Ilas, Roque Laniog Abala Jr., Zuriel Gumi-as Sumintac and Joachim De Jesus Diomampo finished third after logging 6:44:13 behind Vietnam (4:34:94) and Indonesia (6:42:37). Myanmar (6:48:81) and Thailand (7:04:18) were at the tailend of the rankings.
On the other hand, the Filipina rowers also finished third in the women’s quadruple scull with a total of 10:65:00. Joanie Delgaco Talagtag, Amelyn Pagulayan Salarzon, Josephine Mireille Qua Sycip, Kristine Paraon Ramirez trailed behind Vietnam (7:27:11) and Thailand (16:01:00)
In men’s lightweight quadruple sculls, Jasmin along with Emmanuel Joseph Obana, Van Adrian Maxilom, and Athens Greece Tolentino round up as the fourth best team with a 7:11:22. Host Vietnam topped the preliminaries after finishing the race in just 6:48:42 followed by Indonesia (6:55:15), Thailand (07:04:20) and at the fifth spot Cambodia (7:43:22).
