The national women’s football team confirmed its place in the quarterfinals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup after rolling past Indonesia, 6-0, in their final group stage match Thursday, Jan. 27 at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune, India.
Katrina Guillou and Sarina Bolden scored in the first half, captain Tahnai Annis had a brace while Jessica Miclat and Malea Cesar also found the back of the net as the Pinay booters made their way to the last eight after placing second in Group B.
Thailand’s 2-1 loss to group winner Australia assured the Philippines of the runner-up spot and a date with Taiwan in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
A win will not only send coach Alen Stajcic’s side to the semis of the continental tournament, but also secure a spot in next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
But a defeat won’t end the Filipinas’ World Cup dreams as they’ll have to go through a repechage to determine the other spots in the FIFA’s premier women’s competition.
