Organizers of the multi-stage cycling race GO Philippines Tour 2022 has decided to reschedule its debut edition due to the pandemic.
In a post on the tour’s Facebook page Friday night, organizers reset the Feb. 16 to March 6 race to June 1 to 19 “in serious consideration of the public health risks and conditions brought about by the COVID-19.”
Race officials said they were already communicating with the Games and Amusements Board, PhilCycling, participating teams and local government units involved with their decision.
Organizers also decided to cancel its Visayas and Mindanao stages due to the aftermath of typhoon Odette, but will still keep the race to 2,400 kilometers spanning 16 stages all over Luzon starting in Legazpi City, Albay and finishing in Baguio City.
“We seek everyone’s understanding and we hope that the situation in our country improves so that we may be able to safely conduct an arduous race like this,” the statement read.
The race, which seeks to have the same competitive atmosphere as that of previous prestigious local races such as Tour of Luzon and the Marlboro Tour, expects elite and aspiring cyclists to join.
The race also aims to open the curtains of sports tourism in the country that has been affected by the pandemic.
